Summer Employment
Summer employment at The Hartford is a wonderful opportunity to be part of a major corporation, to obtain professional experience and exposure that will set you apart from the competition when you begin looking for your first, full-time position. You will also have many opportunities to interact with current Alliance students, who can guide you and share their college experiences first-hand. And, we hope that your positive summer experiences with us will make The Hartford your employer of choice upon graduation!
Note: The Alliance Program requires that you work at The Hartford during the summer after you graduate from high school. As long as you demonstrate good job performance, you are eligible to work with us during all four of your summer breaks from school.
Types of Jobs
Once you have been accepted into one of our three partner colleges and you have been identified as an Alliance student, a representative from The Hartford will contact you to discuss your career goals and interests. We will use this information to find the summer job at The Hartford, that is right for you.
As an Alliance student, you will be offered a competitive hourly rate and, where possible, you will be placed in a job that matches your interests and/or college major. There are literally hundreds of career opportunities at The Hartford, each offering a different set of challenges and opportunities that will help prepare you for life after college. However, we recognize that some students have career goals that extend beyond the world of financial services. For that reason, we partner with local not-for-profit organizations to provide a limited number of community-based internship opportunities for Alliance students entering their sophomore through senior years in college. Here is a sampling of the types of jobs that are available, both at The Hartford and in the community, along with general descriptions:
Positions at The Hartford:
- Sales, Marketing, Advertising or Corporate Relations:
Requires strong communications and interpersonal skills,
dealing with the general public or other outside organizations.
- Finance, Actuarial, Accounting: Requires strong
mathematical skills and an understanding of how a corporation
prices its products, invests its assets, and manages its
expenses to generate profits and stay in business.
- Technology: Careers that support the development
and maintenance of the Company's mainframe computers, networks
and software systems, and personal computer desktop support
(troubleshooting or designing web-pages).
- Law: The Law Departments of insurance companies get involved in a wide range of issues involving corporate law, government compliance, employment law, insurance products and claims. Employees are in career fields ranging from senior lawyers to paraprofessionals to legal secretaries.
- Claims: These employees are responsible for evaluating
and settling all claims for which our policyholders are
legally entitled. This involves determining liability (fault),
"adjusting" the monetary value of each claim, and the processing
of each claim.
- Underwriting: These employees design products (policies) and establish and administer guidelines to determine if applicants are appropriate "risks" with whom we should do business.
- Human Resources & Training: These employees are
involved with hiring new employees, administering fair compensation
and benefits programs, and ensuring that the Company maintains
ethical and legal employment practices. Some also train
other employees in various insurance and non-insurance subjects.
- Operations: These employees work within the Home
Office, but also coordinate heavily with field offices and
call centers located throughout the country. They ensure
that the policies and systems developed in the Home Office
are properly implemented and look for ways to make it easy
for customers to do business with us.
- Medical Department: Those students interested in
medical careers might intern in our on-site medical area
or possibly obtain exposure to workers compensation, which
involves interaction with doctors and lawyers in settling
claims. Additionally our Industrial Hygiene Lab offers opportunities
for a few students with strong biology interest.
Positions with Community-Based Organizations:
- Hartford Public Schools
For several years, Alliance students interested in pursuing a career in education have worked with the Hartford Public School system. Students generally assist in the day to day operations of the summer school sessions at the major high schools in Hartford.
- Hartford Public Access Television: Students interested in television production, fund raising and event planning have helped Hartford Public Access Television deliver important information and services to the Hartford community.
- Northend Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (NINA): NINA works in the Asylum Hill neighborhood to create positive change through home ownership and public safety initiatives. In 2004, an Alliance student helped NINA in its largest project to date: moving a 114 year-old Victorian house, “The Victorian Lady”, from Sigourney St. to Ashley St.
- Southend Community Services: SCS serves students from Hartford by teaching skills ranging from boat building to running a small business. This is a great opportunity for students interested in community outreach and/or work with young people.
